Cecilia Jorge Maciel Nova Scotia Community College
Hi! My name is Cecilia, and I’m from Brazil. This is my story.
I received my Civil Engineering degree in my home country in 2002. For eight years, I worked for the Brazilian Federal Government helping less fortunate people struggling from natural disasters and lacking drinking water daily. In 2010, I had the honour of being awarded with the Medal of National Civil Defense for the relevant services I rendered to the country. Canada’s vast natural beauty with its many parks and lakes caught my attention. I had wanted to change my career, and I knew that I wanted to do this in Canada. I moved to Halifax, N.S. in September 2016 to study Business Administration at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), and a whole new way of life began for me. There were many new experiences and challenges: different culture, habits, food, and language.
NSCC was piloting an International Student Ambassador Program (ISA), and I joined the volunteer group. We were seven ISAs last year, now we are 18 on four campuses, and I'm the coordinator. It is wonderful helping other international students. Getting the best out of me and people around me is what makes me happy.
During this past year, I have volunteered in student panels at NSCC, the Canadian Bureau for International Education Conference, and the Local Committee of the Student Refugee Program at NSCC.
Next summer, I’ll be part of an International Learning program in the Netherlands. It will provide me the opportunity to learn more about international business which is essential for my future. Running my own business is my goal. I believe in offering people excellent products and exceptional experiences. I am well pleased with this different path I have chosen. The challenges are many but my happiness in Canada gives me the drive and courage to change my life by making my professional and personal dreams come true.
